Last night the who's who of fashion gathered at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for the 2011 Costume Institute Gala. This year attendees celebrated the 'Savage Beauty' exhibition in honour of Alexander McQueen.

I wanted to know more about the event so I did some further research...

The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City houses a collection of more than thirty-five thousand costumes and accessories spanning five continents and as many centuries. Each May, the annual Gala Benefit, its primary fund-raising event, celebrates the opening of the spring exhibition. Under the leadership of Honorary Trustee Anna Wintour (Editor-in-Chief of Vogue), who has been the co-chair since 1995, the gala has become one of the most visible and successful charity events, drawing a stellar list of attendees from the fashion, film, society, business, and music industries. The brainchild of publicity doyenne Eleanor Lambert, the benefit was introduced in 1948 as a midnight supper and dubbed "The Party of the Year." Co-chairs in the past have included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1977-1978), Nicole Kidman (2003, 2005), and Oprah Winfrey (2010). - Vogue.com

Following the church ceremony and lunch hosted by the Queen, Kate Middleton changed into a second (beautiful) gown designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen for a private dinner reception hosted by Prince Charles. I love the angora sweater she wore on top. x.

Did you watch the royal wedding last Friday night? It was one of the most beautiful weddings in history! Kate really looked like a princess in Alexander McQueen (designed by Sarah Burton). As Sarah Mower wrote on Vogue.com -

The dress - pure and yet conveying the grandeur of its importance - is an exquisitely modern example of a personal collaboration between a bride and her designer. 

Catherine has followed her own taste a V-neck décolleté and a silhouette that stayed close to her torso, and long, delicate lace sleeves that evoked, perhaps, the wedding dress worn by Grace Kelly when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. 

Technically faultless in its scale and construction, the dress allowed the bride to move with ease, carrying all the weight of British history and expectation without the slightest wrinkle or hitch. 

That such a feat of appropriateness should have been accomplished in intensely secret conditions—and continually denied by the designer—is in itself incredible in a world of Internet gossip, iPhone photos, and instant communication. More important, it was the symbolism of a partnership in which the individual wishes of a young woman have been expressed and enabled by another young woman of vast talent whose understanding of fashion's role in serving, and underlining, this historic moment is nonpareil.

 A truly modern fairy-tale. x.
